Periodontal Therapy
Having healthy gums is the first step to achieving optimal dental health. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is caused by bacteria that produce toxins that irritate the gums. This causes periodontitis, which turns the gums red with swelling and causes them to bleed easily. If the irritation continues, the gums separate from the teeth and allow spaces to form. As the disease progresses, the supporting tissue and bone that hold teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss.
With regularly scheduled cleanings that are customized to one's gum condition, we can stop the progression of the disease, and restore healthy gums. Doctor Stone and his team are highly trained to identify various gum conditions and treat them proactively. The best methods to prevent gum disease are effective daily brushing and flossing and regular dental examinations and cleanings. Once this disease begins, regular dental examinations and professional cleaning in combination with oral rinses and antibiotic therapy can help to stop the progression.
Other factors affecting the health of your gums include: smoking, diabetes, medication, stress, poor nutrition, grinding and clenching. For grinding of the teeth, and clenching, often Doctor Stone will prescribe a custom made mouthguard.
